CMUL Annual Meeting 2008
Held on 5/24/08 at Stone Mountain Resort in Georgia
The meeting was called to order at 2:05 pm on 5/24/08 by the Interim Secretary of the association Dr. F Bassey-Akamune. This was followed by a welcome address by the representative of the Georgia chapter of the Alumni association Dr. Ajayi. He thanked everyone for coming especially Dr. Akin Awujo who put the program together. The venue was at the beautiful Marriott Stone Mountain resort in Georgia with provision of CME Lecture and activities for the children and spouses. Dr. Ajayi noted the history of the College of Medicine University of Lagos, the campus, and the great vision of our founding fathers. He noted that JFK once said, “ Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” He then thanked those who traveled from out of state and challenged those present to continue with their mission with clear cut vision to reestablish Idiaraba as a great campus. He reminisced on the subsidized meals on campus. He charged us to make a difference and believes that we can. He noted that a book drive was done and urged more alumni to attend the meetings annually and enjoy the venue with their family- the fireworks display, golf, fishing, and shopping at the resort.
This was followed by a welcome address by Dr. Osunkoya- Interim President. He thanked the Georgia chapter of CMUL Alumni for hosting the meeting and was glad that the attendance this year was doubled. He noted the lack of commitment of alumni of CMUL in the effort to resuscitate the association and challenged each one to do more for the school by contributing to the college. He said that we should give even a little and not to wait for charity/charitable organizations. He encouraged us to give back to the school and change the course of events in our alma mater. Dr. Osunkoya also said that we should encourage high level of training of the current doctors in our alma maters as this will impact the quality of care received by our relatives who receive care from these doctors.
This was followed by a CME lecture by Dr. Odugbesan who graduated in 1977 from our alma mater. The CME lecture was on hypertension and diabetes. The secretary thanked Dr. Odugbesan for the excellent CME lecture and his huge financial contribution to the Association and reiterated the fact that if we all contribute a little of the cost of a one foursome game on the golf course per year ($350) it will add up to a lot of money. Minutes of the last meeting held May 26, 2007 in Delaware were read by the secretary and adopted by the house.
The Provost of CMUL- Professor Elesha was scheduled to attend the meeting but was unable to get a Visa because of time constraints. He sent a letter through Dr. Iyanmu and the letter was read to the house by the secretary.
The last fiscal year finances were presented by Dr Osunkoya. Total of $4382.73 was contributed (Annual dues $2600.00, other donations $1782.73). Total expenses for the year was $2949.10 ($1500.00 for Library chairs, $750.00 for IRS to achieve 501c status, other expenses include Web site upgrade/Maintenance and Bank service charges)
Updates regarding the CMUL Association : it was announced that the new website is up and running, it is secure and we can sign in and make payments of contribution and membership dues over the website. Email is back on the website and members are urged to call in for the tele conferences scheduled. The 5013c status of the association has been established. Financial statement was read to the house and adopted by the house. Journals were collected by the association and sent to the school library. It is also hoped that e- journals will be established. For accreditation purposes we have to have both e-journals, textbooks, and paper journals in the main library and departmental libraries as per new NUC (University Commission) guidelines.
It was decided that we need to complete the chair project- make 50 more chairs. Amount donated so far for the chairs operation seat to read - $1600.
