Dr. Norohna of Department of Anatomy called in and read the letter from the provost of college of medicine, University of Lagos Professor Wole Atoyebi. The letter, a copy of which is available on the website, detailed the needs of the school at this time and called on the alumni to help. There was a need for an inverter, photocopy machine and projectors. The alumni were very pleased to speak with Dr. Norohna and thanked her for her contributions to our medical education. She had also been instrumental in getting a bore hole for the female students’ hostel. Thereafter Dr. Norohna excused herself from the teleconference.
The meeting continued with Dr. Osunkoya and Dr. Junard requesting a response to the provost letter to be sent through Dr. Norohna and a copy being emailed to the provost. The president Dr. Osunkoya emphasized the need for the provost to communicate directly with the officers of the alumni office at CMUL Idiaraba.
Dr. Osunkoya informed members that the website is functioning (cmulalumni.com) and that the income, expenses, and financial statement of the association were presented at the annual general meeting and are available for review.
We were able to supply the final set of chairs to the library at CMUL in the summer of 2009 (60 chairs) making a total of 100 chairs. The new frontier now is the letter from the provost. Members present agreed that there should be no direct disbursement of money to any domiciliary account since alumni were concerned about accountability.
Dr. Olu Osunsanmi said there should be a channel of communication with the college. Dr. Junard requested that any equipment supplied by alumni needs to be publicized. Member at the meeting decided that there should be a representative for each year whose responsibility will be to communicate with members of their own set regarding alumni affairs and general alumni matters.
Representative members of these subcommittees are as follows:
Dr. Boker-1979 set
Ngozi Onuoha-1990
1986- Dr. Tex Junard, Dr. Osunkoya
1989 set- Dr. Bassey- Akamune
1987 set- Eric Agbedion
These members need to send information and names of people in their set to cmulalumni2009@gmail.com
It is believed that this will influence the membership drive of the alumni association. These representatives will also be responsible for disseminating information from the alumni association.
Don Nwose requested that alumni should also be directed to go to the website and register so that we can gather information on ourselves to create a central database of all alumni http://www.cmulalumni.com/node/51 If you have any problems with registration please email me at cmulalumni2009@gmail.com. If you want more information on why we need this information, please see http://www.cmulalumni.com/node/52 (please watch the video). We need to indicate what profession/specialty we are in and location.
Dr. Boker suggested establishing an alumni association in LUTH since we do not have a viable association in Nigeria.
Deliberations were then focused on the letter received by the provost and the following decisions were made. Members decided that we should provide 5 office equipments which will be purchased in Nigeria with service contacts for maintenance.
Dr. Oyelewu and Dr. Agbedion suggested that we decide on a time frame, and prioritize. A target amount of $40,000 was set with each member contributing $500. Presidents and other well wishers will contribute any amount with a minimum of $50.00.
The target date for contributions is Jan. 30 2010.
The second phase of the donation will be summer 2010.
Based on the response in January we will be able to decide how to proceed.
Information for donation and mailing address of checks will be placed on the website.
Checks should be made to CMUL Alumni Association of CMUL Dover, DE.
Don Nwose suggested that we need better ways of generating funds and income i.e. place contributions in investment accounts to yield interest, create items with logo for individual alumni to buy, newsletter will also be sent out.
Dr. Bassey-Akamune suggested monthly meetings and the set date for the next meeting is DEC. 19 2009 at 8 pm and the meeting was adjourned.
