Professor Oluwole Ayoola Atoyebi MB, BS, ( Lagos)

Professor Oluwole Ayoola Atoyebi of the Department of Surgery has been appointed Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos with effect from January, 1 2009. The appointment has been approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tolu Odugbemi, OON, NNOM, FAS.

Born on November 9, 1953, Professor Atoyebi had his secondary school education at Oyan Grammar School, Oyan between 1966 and 1969. He was the Overall Best Final Year Student of his alma mater with seven distinctions at the West African School Certificate Examinations. He enrolled at the University of Lagos for his preliminary medicine course in 1972 and was awarded KB Prize for the Best Medicine Student in Basic sciences in 1973.

During his MBBS training, the erudite scholar most won all the available undergraduate awards. For instance, he won the Birmingham Prize for Best Medicine Student in Basic Sciences in 1973, Glaxo Prize for Best All-round Performance in Medicine in General (1976/1977) and May and Baker Prize for Best All-round Performance in Medicine in General (1976/1977). In 1994, Atoyebi was awarded with the Pfizer Travel Fellowship Award to ISBI 10th Congress, Paris.

Professor Atoyebi began his professional career in 1977 during his internship at the famous Adeoyo Specialist Hospital, Ibadan. He was the Medical Office (NYSC) at Moro Local Government, Kwara State (1978/1979) and the Resident Medical Office at Alalade Memorial Hospital, Lagos. He returned to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for his Postgraduate Residency Training between 1980 and 1985. He did a five-month’s clinical attachment at the West Lothiam Burns and Plastic Unit, Scotland,. Between 1985 and 1988, he was the General Surgeon to Salvation Clinic Limited, Lagos.

He was appointed a Senior Registrar in the Department of Surgery by LUTH in June 1988 and became a full time Consultant Surgeon in 1990. Professor Atoyebi applied for and was appointed Lecturer I in the Department of Surgery of the College in October 1992. In 1997, he rose to become a Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor in October 2000 and in October 2005, the Governing Council of the University of Lagos appointed gin full Professor on ‘prima facie’ basis.

The eminent scholar is widely published with numerous with numerous publications to his credit in local and internationally acclaimed journals and books. He has presented over 15 quality papers at conferences within and outside the country and has supervised over 15 postgraduate research works. The untiring researcher is currently working on three research topics. These are the Multidisciplinary Study of the Source and Patterns of Nosocomial Bacterial Pathogens in Surgical Infections; cytology in the Management of Breast Disorders in Nigeria and Multidisciplinary Study of Characteristics of Male Breast Cancer in Lagos.
