Meet the Provost

PROF. STEPHEN O. ELESHA MB, BS, ( Lagos) DABPath ( USA), FACP ( USA) FWACP (Lab Medicine) FNMCPath

Professor Stephen Olafimihan Elesha, an Alumnus of the College, assumed duty on 3rd January 2005. He started his elementary education at Saint Paul's Catholic School, Ebute-Metta, Lagos from 1952-1958. He had his secondary education at St. Finbarr's College, Akoka and later proceeded to Loyola College, Ibadan for his higher School Certificate. He trained and graduated MBBS degrees at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos in 1971, and between 1974 and 1979 he was at University of Toronto, Canada where he obtained Fellowship of the College of American Pathologist (FCAPath), in 1979. Professor Elesha also obtained the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) and Fellowship of Nigeria Medical College in Pathology (FNMCPath) in 1985 and 1994 respectively.

His professional career started at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in 1971 where he was House Officer from 1971-1972; Senior House Officer and Registrar in Morbid Anatomy from 1972 to 1974. He was a Demonstrator in Anatomic Pathology, University of Toronto, Canada between 1974 and 1978. He was also a Fellow in Renal Pathology and Immunopathology at Toronto Western Hospital. After his sojourn in Canada, he returned to Nigeria and was appointed Senior Registrar in Morbid Anatomy at LUTH from 1979-1981.

Professor Elesha joined the services of the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos in February, 1981 as Lecturer Grade I at the Department of Morbid Anatomy. He was promoted Senior Lecture in 1985; Associate Professor in 1992 and Professor in October, 1996. He thus became the first alumnus to be elevated to a full chair in Morbid Anatomy at the College of Medicine, Idi-Araba.Despite his busy professional and academic activities, Professor Elesha still found time to be involved in other administrative duties both within and outside the University of Lagos. At various times, he was Ag. Head, Department of Morbid Anatomy between 1991 and 1997. Until his election as Provost, Professor Elesha was Head of Department of Morbid Anatomy, the position he held since 1998. He was also member, Admissions Committee (1983-1986) and (1990-1992; Hall Master, Alli Akilu Hall (1989-1992); Chairman, Students' Affairs Committee (1989-1992), Housing Committee (1993-1995); and member, College Academic Board and University Senate since 1998.

The Provost has served as Chief Examiner in Basic Sciences and Laboratory Medicine Examinations of Nigeria and West African Postgraduate Medical Colleges. Professor Elesha has also served as Chairman, Scholarship and Prizes Committee, Chairman, Medilag Ventures Limited, and Chairman, 2nd Felix Dosekun Memorial Lecture Organizing Committee which recorded a huge success at the biennial event in November 2003. He has also served as External Examiner at many Universities within the Country. The new Provost is also a member of New York Academy of Science with over 48 scholarly publications in both local and international journals in his area of specialty. A visiting Professor in Anatomic pathology at Ambrose Alli College of Health Sciences, Ekpoma, Edo State, and Professor Elesha also won Unilag State Scholarship (1966-1971) and the Federal Government Postgraduate Scholarship (1975-1978).
